Given :

• Ravi is three times as old as Sonu.

• Five years later, Ravi will be two and a half timesas old as Sonu.

To find :

• Present age of Ravi and Sonu

Solution :

Let,

  • Present age of Ravi = x years
  • Present age of Sonu = y years

According to the first condition given,

⟶ Ravi's age = 3(Sonu's age)

⟶ x = 3(y)

⟶ x = 3y ----(1)

Their ages after 5 years :-

⟶ Ravi's age = x + 5 years

⟶ Sonu's age = y + 5 years

According to the second condition given,

⟶ Ravi's age = 2½ (Sonu's age)

⟶ x + 5 = 5/2 (y + 5)

⟶ 2(x + 5) = 5(y + 5)

⟶ 2x + 10 = 5y + 25

Substituting (1) :-

⟶ 2(3y) + 10 = 5y + 25

⟶ 6y + 10 = 5y + 25

⟶ 6y - 5y = 25 - 10

⟶ y = 15

⟶ The value of y = 15

Substitute the value of y in equation 1 :-

⟶ x = 3y

⟶ x = 3(15)

⟶ x = 45

⟶ The value of x = 45

Therefore,

  • Present age of Ravi = x = 45 years
  • Present age of Sonu = y = 15 years
