Given:

Ravi ordered a carpet that was 1 1/16 inches thick the pad underneath was 5/8 inch thick how much thicker is the carpet than the pad?

To find:

How much thicker is the carpet than the pad?

Solution:

The thickness of the carpet was = 1\frac{1}{16} inches = \frac{17}{16}\:inches

The thickness of the pad underneath the carpet was = \frac{5}{8} \:inches

Therefore,

The difference between the thickness of the carpet and the pad underneath the carpet is,

= \frac{17}{16}  - \frac{5}{8}

taking the L.C.M. of the denominators i.e., 8, 16 is 16

= \frac{17 - 10}{16}

= \bold{\frac{7}{16} \:inches}

Thus, the carpet is \underline{\bold{\frac{7}{16} \:inches}} thicker than the pad.
