Ravi placed a zinc plate in a glass container having a blue coloured solution of a metal sulphate MSO4 for a considerable time. He found that the blue colour of solution got lighter and lighter, and finally the solution became colourless. A red-brown deposit was also formed on the zinc plate.
(a) Which metal, zinc or M, occurs lower in the reactivity series?
(b) Name the substance which forms colourless solution.

M Occurs Lower in Reactivity Series.

Explanation:

  • When the Zinc plate was placed in a Blue colored solution of Metal Sulphate, Ravi found that the solution got faded, which shows that zinc is more reactive as compared with that metal, and displaced it from that solution.

Colorless property of solution after a certain period of time shows that M metal will be Copper.

a.) In terms of reactivity, Zinc is more than Metal.

b.) Zinc Sulphate is formed which makes the solution Colorless.

Zn + CuSo_4 →   ZnSo_4 + Cu

                Blue          Colorless
