The distance between the starting point and ending point.

Solution,

If we visualise his route of journey then we can easily get a reference of a right angle triangle. Because, east and south direction are perpendicular to each other. We just need to calculate the length of the hypotenuse by assuming the two distances as the base and height of a right angle triangle.

Distance between the starting point and ending point

= ✓(3)²+(4)² (By applying Pythagoras theorem)

= ✓9+16

= ✓25

= 5 kilometres

Hence, he was 5 kilometres away from the starting point.
