A displacement reaction will take place because Iron is more reactive than Copper and thus it will displace copper from its salt solution. Now there will be formation of Ferrous sulfate solution which is green in colour.

Blue Green

We should have a idea of the reactivity series of metals as well as non-metals to identify whether a displacement reaction will take place or not. Here, Iron displaced Copper from its salt solution i.e. Copper sulphate and forms Ferrous sulfate, the copper gets deposited on the iron nail turning it into reddish brown colour.

As Ravindra is performing an experiment in the laboratory, it will take little more time for the above reaction because Iron need time to displace the other metal. He should wait and watch the magic of Chemistry!

The blue copper sulphate solution will be changed to a green, iron sulphate solution.

━━━━━━━━━━

The reaction which takes place is as following:

▪Fe(s) + CuSO₄ (aq) → FeSO₄(aq) + Cu (s)

━━━━━━━━━━

Iron being more reactive than copper displaces copper from its salt solution. This reaction is also known as "Displacement reaction".

Also a layer of copper will develop on the iron nail.

Knowledge Cell:

What is displacement reaction?

▪A displacement reaction is a type of chemical reaction where a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from it's salt solution.
