if red blood cells kept in distilled water, it burst in distilled waterecause the cell membrane is quite weak, the cell will burst as the volume and therefore the pressure in the cell increases. thats why it is kept in salinewater.

The water will diffuse by osmosis across the cell membrane into the cell, in an attempt to equalize the water content inside and outside the cell. The result will be the RBC will swell and burst, causing the cell to die. The distilled water wouldrepresent a hypotonic solution.
