RBCs pick up oxygen from lungs and deliver it to the tissues: why is it not the other way around?

Partial pressure of O2 in lungs is 104 mm Hg while in tissues it is 40 mm Hg. As we know that gases move from higher partial pressure to lower pp therefore RBC's pick up O2 from lungs and deliver it to the tissues.
