There are two types of verb in English finite and nonfinite.  

• gerunds and participles are important types of non finite verbs.
• Gerunds are used as nouns as they are formed from verbs only they always end with the form of ING.
• Example -  snowboarding is fun! ( Gerund)
• participle are created from verbs  but are used as adjective or  adverbs , they also end in ING but not in the form of past tense.  
• for example-  right now athlete is snowboarding. ( Present participle)
