While undertaking this investigation task, I was invited to attend a gamelan rehearsal and performance at the Griffith University Conservatorium of Music, Southbank. This was a challenging but rewarding experience as I participated and played a metallophone with the gamelan orchestra. It was specifically difficult to understand the technique of dampening the instrument as you played, as it was so different to anything I had been previously exposed to. This also made me aware of the extreme level of technique Balinese gamelan players must adhere to. The gamelan orchestra at the Griffith University Conservatorium of Music is one of just three gamelans in Brisbane (Howard, 2015). A number of cultures were represented amongst the student group which showed that there is continuous interest from all cultures, and in general, the gamelan institution is slowly growing. Through the visit, I observed that they acknowledged cultural traditions such as putting flowers next to the gong and removing their shoes before entering the room as an element of respect to traditional gamelan orchestras in Indonesia. The gamelan they played was very soothing and from the research conducted, the musical characteristics aligned with traditional gamelan characteristics.
