Alcohol reacts with difficulty across the unsaturated triple bond of ethyne, unless it is in alcoholic solution. The alcohol plays no part in the reaction. The gas is bubbled through the iodine solution which becomes colourless as the iodine adds across the unsaturtaed bond. This decolouration of halogen solutions is a well known qualitative test for unsaturation of alkenes and alkynes. Normally bromine water is used. The reaction is
C2H2 +I2 → CHI=CHI The product is diiodoethene
