● Sulphonation -
- Replacement of hydrogen atom by a sulphonic acid group (SO3H) is called sulphonation.
- It is carried out by heating desired hydrocarbon with fuming sulphonic acid.

● Example -
- Sulphonation of benzene gives benzene sulphonic acid.
- The reaction is represented by following equation-
C6H6 + conc.H2SO4 ---> C6H5-SO3H + H2O
