When methyl bromide is treated with aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, the reaction taking place will be substitution reaction in which halo atom attached to alkyl group is replaced by hydroxyl group to form methanol.this mechanism is SN2 which stands for substitution nucleophilic bimolecular reaction since the attack of reagent can take place through both side .primary alkyd halides tends to undergo SN2 whereas tertiary always favour SN1 mechanism.

Here there will be two types of product in this rxn which is totally based on the configuration ie arrangement of species around central atom .the products are 50% inversion configuration and 50% retention configuration.
