Bisulfite addition products are formed from aldehydes but reaction with ketone is limited to methyl ketones and cyclic ketones upon treatment with sodium bisulfite. *All aldehydes form the hydroxy sulfonates, but not all ketones react. The reaction is sensitive to steric effects.
