When D-glucose react with the concentrated nitric acid to give D-glucaric acid as a product which contains the same number of carbon atoms as glucose.
Nitric acid is a strong oxidizing agent, which oxidizes not only the aldehyde group but also primary alcoholic group present in the molecule to carboxylic acid (glucaric acid).
