Hydrocarbons such as pentane (C5H12) ( C 5 H 12 ) will undergo complete combustion in the presence of sufficient amounts of oxygen to give carbon dioxide and water. When the amount of oxygen is not sufficient, the combustion is incomplete to give poisonous carbon monoxide and water.
