The metallic iron formed is transferred to the second reactor, where it reacts with steam to produce iron oxide and hydrogen. With hydrogen as the reducing gas in the first reactor, this process allows generation of pure hydrogen in the second reactor with separation of carbon oxides.

When iron reacts with steam they form Ferric Oxide and evolve the Hydrogen gas.
