Metal Hydrides

Metals generally don't react with hydrogen because hydrogen individuals tends to give away an electron rather than gaining one.

But highly reactive metals like Potassium, Sodium, Calcium & Magnesium forcibly gives their one or two electrons to hydrogen forming ionic hydrides.

Thus metallic hydrides are always ionic compounds which is formed by gaining & loosing of electrons

Most of the metals do not react with hydrogen . Only a few reactive metals react with hydrogen to form metal hydrides . For example : When Hydrogen gas is passed over heated sodium , then sodium hydride is formed . ... For example : Sulphur combines with hydrogen to form Hydrogen sulphide .

hope this will help you...
