Ethyl bromide ( C_{2}H_{5}Br ) can be converted into ethane ( C_{2}H_{6} ) by following steps of reaction -

(i) React ethyl bromide with aqueous KOH to form ethanol ( C_{2}H_{5}OH ) .

(ii) React ethanol with red phosphorous in the presence of hydrogen iodide ( HI ) to form ethane .

  • The molar mass of ethane ( C_{2}H_{6} ) is 30.07 g/mol .
  • Red P in HI is used to generate Nascent Hydrogen .
