since the reaction is very exothermic, part of the hydrogen reacts with theoxygen of the air to give water again. Sodium metal reacts rapidly with water to form a colourless solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) andhydrogen gas (H2). The resultingsolution is basic because of the dissolved hydroxide.
