Depending on the conditions employed,
maleic anhydride and hydrazine hydrate react to give 1,2-dimaleic acid hydrazine (l), maleic hydrazine,(ll) {1,2-dihydro-3,6-pyridazinedion } and a yellow coloured complex mixture which contains a small amount of l. Compound l was converted by hydrogenation to the known 1,2-disuccinic acid hydrazine and by refluxing in water to ll.
