Zinc reacts with Nitric acid to generate hydrogen and make a solution of zinc nitrate: Zn * 2 HNO3 - Zn(NO3)2 * H2. It should be noted however that refined zinc does not perform this reaction so vigorously and that the impurities in zinc granules have a catalytic effects.
