Ambi the king of Takshashila was the most prominent ruler. He was the sworn enemy of Porus and was more than keen to help Alexander against his rival. Along with him, great many chieftains in the region of Gandhara(modern Afghanistan) helped Alexander. Although we must realise that the concept of India did not exist over then. For Ambi, there would be little difference between Alexander and maybe the Nanda empire, the largest empire in North India at that time, both were in his eyes foreign invaders.
Also Gandhara had been part of the Persian empire at least during the time of Darius the great so they were more exposed to foreigners compared to other parts of India. By this time, alexander had a large number of Persians serving in his army so it might have been easier for him to negotiate with these kingdoms.
