1. General information of the book – It is a mystery novel written by Mark Haddon. It is the story of a 15 year boy named Christopher, who lives in Swindon, Wiltshire. Christopher himself is narrating the story and has written this book after all the incidents happened in his life. He describes himself as a mathematician. The chapter numbers in the book are prime numbers and not the general number order. This book has won Book of the Year and Whitbread Book Award.
2. Author description – Mark Haddon is a 56 year old English novelist. He has done MA in English Literature. He has written many children books. He also writes poetry and plays. His first book, Gilbert’s Gobstopper, was published in 1987. He is famous for his Agent Z book series.
3. Character description – The protagonist of the novel, Christopher, is a Math enthusiast. He sees the world in a different manner. He suffers from some syndrome similar to Autism, but this is not clearly mentioned in the book. He investigates the murder of Mrs. Shears’ dog, Wellington. He has the habit of poking his nose in other people’s business. He takes literal meaning of everything that is said to him. He finds difficult to connect with people.
4. Summary and moral of the story – Christopher lives with his father. His mother, as reported by Christopher, died two years ago. One day, he discovers the slain body of his neighbor’s dog. He starts investigating the case and due to some misunderstanding with the policeman, who thinks he is the murderer, he lands up in prison. During investigation, he finds that his father and their neighbor are in a relationship and that his mother is very much live and she left him because of his father, who had actually killed the dog. He goes to London to live with his mother and overcomes his social fears during journey. The novel ends with him and his mother returning to Swindon and Christopher taking A grade exams in Math and Physics. He now knows he can do anything, as he solved mystery of a murder. The moral of the story is to overcome one's fear and treat problem as learning opportunity.
