WRITINGS OF R. K. NARAYAN

The writings of R. K. Narayan are in a simple form and with subtle humor. He told stories of normal people trying to live their simple lives in a changing world.  The stories are not meant to convey something insightful but a mere narration of short-lived experiences that in themselves contribute to the realisation of the subtleties of Indian life. He made no attempt to present India in an exotic light for the sake of the foreign audience. He was a traditional teller of tales, a creator of realist fiction that was often gentle, humourous, and warm rather than hard-hitting or profound.

In the short story from Malgudi days "An Astrologer's Day," the main character is the astrologer. He is an ordinary man who practices being a genuine astrologer. He starts his job at midday by seeking out people who need to know more about their futures. When a client would sit down, he would allow the client to talk for ten minutes in order to gain enough information to go on. He was a good judge of character. He could read people very well.  He understood the problems of life. He understood financial woes and marriage problems. He would guess his way through an encounter with a client.

The Astrologer happens to be my favourite character because even if he has no knowledge about his work but he handle people thinking in a very profound way and happens to tell everyone the correct thing, which they want to hear from him so even if he's not accurate about someone's future he always happens to be correct about their character and helps other in recognizing their true self.
