A Strange Night
On a cold night in August 1942, Noor woke up suddenly to a screeching noise
outside her window. She lit a candle and silently moved towards the window.
The forest looked deep and dark, but the tops of the trees could be clearly
seen in the moonlight. There were no birds and animals out and about in the
forest. Just then, she heard the noise again! This time, it seemed to be
coming from just outside the door of her house. Noor gulped in fear and
thought to herself, "Will it be safe to open the door at this time of the night?"
The noise outside her door grew louder and she could hear a deep voice
murmuring something. She hesitantly walked towards the entrance and put
her ear to the door. Then, she cleared her throat and asked, "Who is there?
What do you want?". For a minute, there was silence and Noor wondered if
she had imagined the noise. Suddenly, she heard the deep voice say again,
"Noor, I am a traveller. You must help me. I have been walking for days, and
I need some water. I have hurt my feet."
