This caused the corals to become bleached. Scientists are not sure what the long-term effects will be. Normally, corals are very colorful. They receive nutrients from the algae that live inside of them. When the ocean becomes too hot, however, the algae release toxins. So, the corals "kick out" the algae. This causes them to become sick and turn white. If corals remain bleached for too long, they can die. Researchers will continue to observe this process to understand it better.
