According to this report people viewed Gandhi as a Mahatma or sadhu. People believed him to be a deota(god) whose sayings were ought to be right and to be followed . Gandhi being a pandit , a brahmin might not be known to people during that time but he was seen as someone to be abided by .
As Gandhi stopped the illegal eviction in pratapgarh therefore people felt that he opposed the zamindars but not to government . People were in favour of him because his deeds brought some level of peace in their lives.
