The old soldier in my town

I was very fond of the old soldier in our little town when I was young. He used to tell me about his adventures, sitting on the bank of our small river. He used to tell me dozens of war stories but the ke I like the most was how he escaped from a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. He had walked two hundred miles in two weeks, getting bitten on the toe by a snake on his way. He eventually had to amputate his whole leg as the wound had turned septic by the time he reached an Indian camp. He says that his pension and the money he gets from the fish is enough for him. So he's apparently quite content with his lot.
