A Matter of Tact
Rhoda Janeia D. Lanciola
President Rodrigo Duterte has always taken Filipinos by storm with his rash language and tactlessness. On recent happenings, the Chief Executive struck again with a statement claiming Extrajudicial Killings were his “only sin”, leading to people taking this as an admission of guilt. Words, whether empty or not, holds much importance when one is in a place of power. In Duterte’s case, it’s one thing often taken for granted and abused.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque quickly defended the President on his EJK remark saying it is insufficient evidence to add to the impending investigation against him before the International Criminal Court (ICC). This is a usual scenario every time Duterte pulls such a stunt; his supporters fearlessly defending his name. Although this may all be flattering for his sake, it is actually quite an unfair treatment to his loyal subjects.
Furthermore, he may have gotten away with the many times he has let his rash nature prevail, now may finally be the exemption his critics were waiting for. According to Human Rights lawyer Antonio La Viña, Duterte’s statement could be taken literally and be considered parallel to his previous statements about the collateral damage of his war against illegal drugs. Regardless of the outcome of the investigation, this has caused a tarnish to the rather good start of his term.
With everything circling the issue, it all boils down to Duterte’s inability to think before he speaks. As petty as it may seem, he is still the Head of the State. He was chosen by the people to hold this country together. Unfortunately, his brashness is doing the opposite; making his supporters look like fishes out of water as his critics pick on every evidence they can gather against him. He is culturing a nation that is tearing itself apart.
Words hold power and it is high time the Philippines’s leader realizes this. By gaining more control of this power, he may be able to ignite more than just quarrels between enemy parties but rather, a revolution which may drive this country to greatness. After all, he gained the support of many for his potential to do so. It is only a matter of tact.
