Read the case and answer the questions that follow.

7.The client, 24 years of age, a student of M.Sc Biology, visited the

clinic with the following symptoms .When he was in any social

situation he felt the onset of headaches, palpitations, a pounding

heart, jelly like legs, felt he was choking accompanied with

shortness of breath, nervousness, dizziness, losing control on

himself and feelings of detachment from the surroundings for a few

minutes. The client reported that he was losing control and felt

faint. As a result he felt low, started to isolate himself, had loweredattention and could not concentrate on his studies. The client

blamed his father for his poor mental health.

The client was treated in the following way: he was first educated

about the nature of the disorder and the role of fearful thoughts in

the production of his symptoms and how adrenaline was secreted

because of the activation of the sympathetic nervous system. This

system commonly was activated in the fight or flight reaction, no

matter if the fear was real, or imagined. In the case of panic

anxiety, a person had fearful thoughts that are mostly imagined .

The client was educated that there was no safe place or safe

person but that “You are the safe place and the safe person. The

reason that these symptoms existed is because you are terrifying

yourself with your thoughts.” He was counseled that instead of

feeling terrifyed about the symptoms as a result of the secretion of

adrenaline about “what is happening,” “Accept” the feeling and

recognize the situation that because of the scary and the fearful

thoughts in your mind, adrenaline is secreted, and due to this

secretion, symptoms like pounding of heart, sweating etc were the

result. He was educated in the following way: “When you accept

and understand the real cause of the symptoms you will have no

more of these aggravated symptoms. Initially they may still appear,

but when you don’t feel frightened by these symptoms ,they will

subsidize.” Treatment consisted of seven sessions over 9 weeks.

Client now has control over his worst symptoms of panic anxiety in
