Explanation:
The extract belongs to the story "The Last Lesson" written by Alphonse Daudet.
- The human tendency to put off learning new things because we think we have plenty of time, even though we have no idea when doomsday will arrive and put an end to our goals and dreams, is beautifully captured in the lesson.
- Little Franz, the narrator of the story, is a young boy who goes to school. The narrator was anxious one fine morning because he was already late for school. He was well aware that Mr M. Hamel, his teacher, would punish him, particularly for not revising the participles.
- The previous day, his teacher informed them that he would ask them questions about participles. The narrator, on the other hand, was more afraid of being scolded because he did not know anything about the subject.
- On a particular day on his way to school, he was thinking about something else for the time being. It was to get away from the class and have a good time at the park. He decided to take advantage of the bright and warm weather. He found the birds chirping in the woods near the edge. He could hear the drilling of Prussian soldiers behind the sawmill.
- All these things fascinated him a lot but he reminded himself about the present, about the rule for participles.
