This poem is written by Robert Frost who has shown the apathy of rich city people towards the road-side shed owners
EXPLANATION:
- A little old house on one side of the road was expanded and a shed was made so that a road-side stand could be put to attract passers-by (rich city men by extending the road-side stand nearer to the road) to purchase things (vegetables and fruits) from the road stand so that the owners of the road stand could earn some money.
- The traffic referred is the cars and other vehicles of the rich people to and from different cities. These rich city people are in such hurry to earn money by undertaking business in the city.
- The stand’s existence is pathetic since the shed’s condition was humble and presented a pitiable sight. Moreover, the road-side stand owners’ only expectation is the inflow of city-money into their hands. However their desires are never accomplished since these rich men are not thoughtful about them and therefore it is a pathetic existence for the road-side stand.
- Personification, where a motionless object is spoken like it has life.
