Answers
Here are some answers from "Merchant of Venice":
a. What does Portia say about the French Lord and his horse?
Portia feels that the French Lord had a ‘better horse’ than the Neapolitan prince did. It could be an indication of his being financially better off than the Neapolitan prince, because horses are expensive animals. Also, their maintenance requires a lot of effort and money.
b. Which characteristic is common between the French Lord and the Count Palatine?
Portia felt that both the men had a bad habit of frowning. People frown when they are troubled by some thoughts. A frown is never pleasant and suggests that the person is not cheerful by nature. Both the French Lord and Count Palatine seem to be very serious men who do not know how to enjoy life.
c. Explain: He is every man in no man.
This means that the French Lord tries to have so many qualities that eventually he does not come across as a man of any substance. Instead, Portia feels that he does not have a personality of his own. He has qualities of every man, but still is not an accomplished man.
d. How does the French Lord react to the sound of a thrush’s singing?
The French Lord overreacts to the singing of the thrush. He suddenly starts dancing. He just needs an excuse to show off his skills.
e. Give any four negative qualities of the French Lord as described by Portia.
Portia identified some negative qualities of the French Lord. These include his bad habit of frowning, his desire to show off his fencing skills (“He will fence with his own shadow”), his habit of overreacting (“If a throstle sing, he falls straight a- capering”) and his lack of individuality (“He is every man in no man”).
