the old yew-tree, and the wind wandered moaning round the
house like a lost soul; but the Otis family slept unconscious of
their doom...'

1.these particular birds are horrible that's why writer refer to these particular birds.

2.the wind was moving like a lost soul.the place was terrible that's why the wind is described lost soul.

3.they were making fun of the ghost this is the reason the ghost was angry with family.

4.the ghost was planning to scare the family and yes he wasn't successful.

5.the ghost wasn't successful.he met another ghost and he became scare from the ghost.
