These lines have been taken from the poem 'Father to Son' by Elizabeth Jennings. This poem is in +1 English Core syllabus (CBSE).
in these lines the poet is expressing his wish for his son's return to him in the same way the Prodigal Son in the Biblical story returned to his father. The father has a longing to forget all the differences between him and his son; he wants to forgive him and develop a new loving relationship with him.
