Many of the Cholas' accomplishments were made possible by new agricultural innovations. Before emptying into the Bay of Bengal, the river Kaveri splits into several small streams. These streams also overflow, dumping fertile soil along their banks. Water from the streams is also used to provide moisture for agriculture, especially rice farming.

While agriculture had grown earlier in other parts of Tamil Nadu, this region was only opened up for large-scale cultivation in the fifth or sixth centuries. In some cases, forests had to be cleared, while in others, land had to be levelled. Embankments had to be constructed in the delta area to avoid floods, and canals had to be built to transport water to the fields. Two crops were grown in several areas each year.
