Read the following and answer any four questions from 15 (i) to 15 (iv) given below: 4marks

Amrita biology teacher taught in biology class that food help in building the body and also provide

us energy to work. However she was not able to understand the mechanisms involved.

So she discussed it with his father who is a professor of biology in a college. He answered that in

living organisms certain structures, present in the cells and known as power houses of cells, which

are responsible for conversation of food in to energy.

Read the about passage and answer the following question:-

(i) Which cell organelles are known as power house of cell? Why

(ii) List major components of mitochondrion

(iii) What values are displayed by Amrita father?

(iv) Importance of ATP.

Answer

Answer 1

Mitochondria is called the powerhouse of cell. They are so called because they carry out the process of aerobic respiration and generate the energy molecules (ATP or adenosine Triphosphate) for cell operation.

Answer 2

Mitochondria has four distinct major components:

  • The outer membrane
  • The inner membrane
  • The intermembrane space
  • The matrix

Answer 3

The value given by Father is that in living organisms certain structures, present in the cells and known as power houses of cells, which

are responsible for conversation of food in to energy.

Answer 4

Adenosine triphosphate or ATP is often called the energy currency of the cell because this molecule plays a key role in metabolism, particularly in energy transfer within cells. The molecule acts to couple the energy of exergonic and endergonic processes, making energetically unfavorable chemical reactions able to proceed.
