FROM RAGS TO RICHES

Written by: Zoya Mehta

A look in her wallet told her that it hardly contained a few dollars. She needed to go to the supermarket desperately. Her provisions were running low, and her baby girl needed milk and fruits. She sat down and wept, feeling helpless and angry with the world. Her husband had left her a month before. Two years before, her mother had died after a long illness. She still missed her every day. She had no job, and she had to take care of her five-month-old baby girl. She was barely surviving on government welfare. She had no idea when she would be able to find work. Everything seemed dark and hopeless.

A good long cry later, she picked herself up and went to the supermarket, her baby girl in tow. She couldn’t afford to be weak. She had to be strong, if only for her baby girl. She searched the shelves for offers and discounts and managed to get some provisions for both of them. Reaching home, she fed and rocked her baby to sleep. She took out her outdated rusty computer and started mailing the publishing houses she had heard of. Her novel had already been rejected by 12 different publishers, but it was not like her to simply give up. She believed in her story. She only needed to make a publishing house believe in it, too.

Her thoughts went back to the time she had moved to Portugal to teach English. She remembered scribbling on any scrap paper she could find, whenever or wherever she was: while on the train, at the bus stop, while preparing dinner, or anywhere else the story took life in her head. She remembered how she had so many scraps of paper that she was afraid of losing parts of the novel she was working on. Her mind was filled with the images of a wonderful school; of witches and wizards; of a neglected, messy haired boy who always thought he was as ordinary as he was unloved; and of the world of magic that she wanted every child in the world to grow up with.

She would even go down to some cafes and sit there with an old typewriter, typing everything up by herself. Her baby girl would be sleeping beside her in a pram. It was a time when she could not afford to hire somebody to type or to take multiple copies of the manuscript. She typed every single copy that she sent to be reviewed by publishing houses. And every time a rejection came through the mail, her heart sank and she grew more desperate, but she refused to let go of hope.

She slowly shook herself from her thoughts, feeling completely drained, physically and emotionally. That was when she heard a ping on her computer. One of the publishing houses had gotten back to her. They were interested in printing her book! She couldn’t believe her eyes. Finally, the break she had been waiting for! She hugged her baby tight and laughed and cried at the same time. Even though Bloomsbury was a relatively young publishing company, she had no second thoughts about handing over her manuscript.

They decided to print 500 copies of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and secured her an advance of £2,500. The book appeared in print in 1997. By 1999, 3,00,000books had been sold in the UK alone and also won numerous awards. The rest is history, of course! Today, J. K. Rowling is one of the most iconic fiction writers in the world, and the seven Harry Potter books have sold more than 450 million copies worldwide.
