Read the following extract and write its summary. Give the summary a title. (5)

Our ship had barely reached the thick ice of the Antarctica when hurrying to meet us,

came the smaller penguins, those amusing birds which look so much like little fat men

with black tall coats and big white shirt fronts.

It was not until that we saw an Emperor penguin. When he arrived, it was with dignity,

his bright orange head shaking sideways with a wise and knowing air. He was ad tall and

as heavy as many a bit of twelve. The Adelie penguins, weighing about sixteen pounds

each, were standing on a ledge overhanging the sea. They presented an amusing sight.

They wanted to dive, but were prevented by fear of a possible lurking enemy.

Penguins, these unusual birds, lost the ability to fly millions of years ago. Their wings

developed into flipper, which serve as paddles in the water. These flippers, and the

webbed feet, make them marvellous swimmers and divers. This helps them to catch fish

which are their staple food. Even as we watched, one Adelie penguin fell off the sea ledge

into the water. The others peered down and when they saw no sea lion lurking in the

waters, they all dived in.

Explanation:

As soon as the ship reached Antartica, the small penguins who resembled men clothed in black and white, ran to greet the narrator. Then came the Emperor penguin with dignity and poise shaking his orange head. Adelie penguins of sixteen pounds were amused but couldn't dive in due to the fear of enemies.

The wings of penguins are more like flippers that help them swim but render them unable to fly. They are both amazing swimmers and divers. They survive on fish.

As the narrator stood and watched, an Adelie penguin fell into the water and was joined by the others since there was no sign of a sea lion.
