Answer:
This stanza has been derived from the poem, ‘The Trees’ by Adrienne Rich.
This poem describes the decorative plants which are grown by humans for beautification. It is a metaphor for human beings, particularly women. Like the trees that have been cut and housed in small decorative plants, women have been oppressed for many years. This poem states that similar to nature, who is struggling to free itself from the onslaught of mankind, even the women are striving hard to break free from their bondage.
1. Human civilization has cut a large number of trees in the forest, which have made them empty. As there are no trees, the birds cannot sit on the trees and even the insects have no place to hide in the trees.
2. The line ‘no sun bury its feet in Shadow” means that due to deforestation and absence of trees in the forest, even the hot sun finds no place to cool itself as it cannot bury its hot feet in the shadows of the trees.
3. In this stanza, the term occupied could mean “will be full of”
4. The poetess states that after suffering oppression and destruction by mankind, nature, which represents trees have started freeing themselves and rushing towards light. The poetess is hopeful that after a long struggle, the trees will reach their natural habitat
Answer:
1. The forest is referred to as an empty forest because 'there are 'no trees in it.' It is empty because all the trees have been cut down by humans for their selfish needs. They have built buildings and cities where there were forests and as a result, the forest is empty.
2. The 'forests were empty' and the 'sunlight could reach' the ground and could hide under the shadow of the trees, this is what no sun bury its feet in the shadow.
3. The word ‘empty’ depicts the meaning of the word unoccupied.
4. The poet imagines that the trees will move by morning and fill up the forest. That is how the 'empty forest will be 'full of trees' by morning.
