The poet in 'Fire and Ice' confesses that he has 'tasted of desire' which means he has experienced desire such as greed and lust and has witnessed its effects. He has had many worldly desires which he compares to fire and then admits that they have a destructive quality. He speaks from first hand experience and thus agree with fire whereas ice means hatred and he is against hatred.
