Read the following paragraph carefully and answer the following

questions [1×4 =4]

The main organs that make up the digestive system (in order of their function)

are the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and

anus. Helping them along the way are the pancreas, gall bladder and liver. The

mouth is the beginning of the digestive tract. In fact, digestion starts before you

even take a bite. Your salivary glands get active as you see and smell that pasta

dish or warm bread. After you start eating, you chew your food into pieces that

are more easily digested. Your saliva mixes with the food to begin to break it

down into a form your body can absorb and use. When you swallow, your

tongue passes the food into your throat and into your oesophagus.

A series of muscular contractions within the oesophagus called peristalsis

delivers food to your stomach.

Stomach is where protein digestion of food takes place by pepsin enzyme. From

there, food moves into the small intestine - where complete digestion of food

occurs.

Most nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine, where food is broken down

even more by enzymes released from the pancreas and bile from the liver.

Anything left in the small intestine moves into the large intestine, which is also

known as the colon.

The colon is a 5- to 7-foot long muscular tube that connects the small intestine

to the rectum. It’s responsible for processing waste. On average, it takes about

36 hours for waste, or stool, to get through the colon and exit the rectum

through the anus.

To summarize, humans show holozoic mode of nutrition with ingestion,

digestion, absorption, assimilation and finally egestion.

1. Mention the function of tongue in digestion of food in human being.

2. Name the other name for large intestine.

3. Which food mainly gets digested in stomach?

4. Write the role of oesophagus in human digestive system.
