Read the following passage and answer the following questions:

Cell walls permit the cells of plants, fungi and bacteria to withstand hypotonic external

media without bursting. In such media the cells tend to take up water by osmosis. As

a result the cell swells and builds up pressure against the cell wall. The wall exerts as

equal pressure against the swollen cell. Because of their walls, such cells can

withstand much greater changes in the surrounding medium than animal cells.

a) What do you understand by ‘hypotonic external medium’?

b) Choose two keywords from the list given, which best define the characteristics of

cell wall:

Flexible, soft, rigid, permeable, impermeable, semi permeable, living, non-living

c) What will happen to the plant cell, if it is kept in hypertonic medium?
