a country having diversity of culture, religious, languages, races and socio-
economic problems. It is the biggest functional democracy in the world and the
world looks at it working with interest. The question of its future is often raised
by several political thinkers. It has gone through so many stressing socio-
economic and political situations. Recently it has experienced a hung Parliament
at the Centre. In Uttar Pradesh too, it is experiencing a political crisis. There
have certainly been such occasions when the future of democracy is felt at
stake. But the system has never stagnated. It has been working, no matter
sluggishly, to keep on moving.
