Fresh Air and Sunshine
There was a time when people did not know that fresh air was healthy. They kept their
windows shut day and night. They stayed indoors as if they were delicate. If they were ill,
they carefully kept away from all air that moved. Even the strong and healthy were afraid
of dwarfs; especially at night. It was thought that the night air was harmful. The people of
those days kept their bedroom windows shut at night. Their beds had curtains which were
drawn round the sleeper so as to protect them from puff of night air that might have come
in through the crack of the windows.
Just as they did not know the value of fresh air, they did not know the value of sunlight as
well. Little children were warned not to play in the sun; and when they had to go out into
the sunshine, they were told not to expose their faces, or their arms to the sun's rays.
