Rubber was called rubber because at first its chief use was to rub out pencil marks. We still use it for that purpose in our daily life. It was called indian rubber because it was found in the west indies by the Europeans.
Columbus, who went to discover america, saw the west indians playing with balls. These balls were made of rubber. Rubber is really the juice of a particular tre. When it dries up, it becomes solid. But though it is solid, it remains soft and pliable. Rubber trees chiefly grow in South-east asia, south america and central africa. They grow where it rains heavily. They need a hot climate.
