Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
Over two thousand years ago, work began on the world's first light house. It was
built on the order of the king of Egypt. He wanted to be the first, the biggest and
the best lighthouse in the world. Thousands of workers worked for many years
for construct the lighthouse on a small island near Egypt's coast. At first, they
build a large square building. On this they put up the lighthouse tower. When the
tower was completed, it stood over 150 metre high had eight sides and was made
of white marble. At the top of great tower was the lantern of the lighthouse. And
on top of the lantern was placed a huge bronze statue of the sun god. What a
sight it must have been!
By day by night a bright fire was kept burning in the round lantern of the
lighthouse. Wood for the fire was carried to the top by mean of a lift which
worked by water power -an invention of the clever Egyptians. But the most
brilliant idea of all was the way they used a big mirror to reflect the light from
the fire across the sea. It was said that the light could be seen across forty-five
kilometres.
Egypt's lighthouse became known all over the ancient world and was considered
one of Seven Wonders of the World. It stood for almost 1500 years until it was
destroyed by an earthquake. Sadly, little is left of this magnificent building
today..
