Hari had been so tired and weak and anxious that first night that he had not really been aware
of the place in which he found himself. He only saw it for the first time when he woke up the
next morning
The Hungry Traveller was the meanest and shabbiest restaurant Hari had ever seen in Nasik,
there were cafés that were more pleasant; usually wooden shacks built in the shade of a
mango tree with colourful bottles of aerated drinks arranged on the shelves and a picture of a
god or goddess hanging on the wall.
But the Hungry Traveller did not have even a picture of a God in the wall. The ceiling was
thick with cobwebs, grime and soot. The floor and the wooden tables all black. It was
certainly the cheapest restaurant anyone could possibly find in Nasik even a beggar could
afford to buy himself a meal h
