Hungary is a sovereign country in Central Europe. Its capital is Budapest, through which flows the river Danube. Tisza is the other important river in this country of Central Europe. Landlocked Hungary shares borders with several countries.viz. Slovakia in the north, Ukraine in the northeast. Austria in the northwest, Serbia in the South, Crotia in the southwest, Slovenia in the west and Romania in the east respectively. Hungary is a member of several geopolitical groups: it is a member of the EU, NATO, OECD, Vise grad etc. It is also a signatory to the Schengen agreement which allows free movement of citizens across 26 countries in Europe.
The official language of the country is Hungarian which is spoken by nearly 98.9 % of the population. A small minority speak German. Among foreign languages, the most spoken are English and German. Some people speak Romanian too.
Hungary is geographically divided into three main regions, viz. Dunantul (beyond the Danube), Tiszantul (beyond the Tisza) and Duna- Tisza Koze (between the Danube and the Tisza). Hungarian Folk Music is a great unifying factor and is also a symbol of national identity. This wonderful music has also become quite popular across Slovakia, Romania especially in the Transylvania region and in Southern Poland. Ferenc Erkel and Frank Lisz established a music academy that has gone to produce many important musicians.
In the world of Cuisine and Hospitality too Hungary has attained prominence. Paprika (ground red peppers) is the key spice and the city of Kalocsa produces the best paprika. Other specialties of Hungarian cuisine are Hungarian Sour Cream and Hungarian hot river fish soup.
Rich in textile production, this country is the hub of Embroidery Designs, which varies from region to region. A significant ethnic Hungarian population in Kalotaszeg in the Transylvania region produces charming oriental designs, sown chiefly in a single colour. Sarkoz in Transdanubia and the Matysfold region are home to the finest embroideries. Women’s caps with black and white designs are wonderful works of art: the same designs are transposed to tablecloths and wall decorations which are very pleasing to the eye!
