Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: The policeman on the beat moved up the avenue impressively. The time was barely 10 o'dock at night. When about midway of a certain block, the policeman suddenly slowed his walk. In the doorway of a dark hardware store a man stood, with an unlighted cigar in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him the man said: "It's alright officer, I'm just waiting for a friend. It's an appointment made twenty years ago The man at the doorway struck a match and lit his cigar. The light showed a pale, square-jawed face with keen eyes, and a little white scar near his right eyebrow. "Twenty years ago tonight," said the man. "He and I were raised here in New York, just like two brothers, together. I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was to start for the West to make my fortune. But Jimmy decided to stay there. We agreed that night that we would meet here again exactly twenty years from that date and time, no matter what our conditions might be." "Haven't you heard from your friend since you left?" asked the policeman. "Well, yes, for a time we corresponded." said the other. "But after a year or two we lost track of each other. But I know Jimmy will meet me here if he's alive, for he always was the truest chap in the world. The policeman took a step or two and said, "Tl be on my way. Hope your friend comes around all right." About twenty minutes the man in the doorway waited, and then a tall man, hurried across from the opposite side of the street. He went directly to the waiting man. -3- "Is that you. Bob?" he asked, doubtfully. "Is that you, Jimmy Wells?" cried the man at the door. "I was certain I'd find you here if you were still in existence. Well, twenty years is a long time." "You've changed lots, Jimmy," said, Bob "I never thought you were so tall by two or three inches." "Oh, I grew a bit after i was twenty. Come on, Bob; we'll go around to a place I know of, and have a good long talk about old times." The two men started up the street, arm in arm. The man from the West, was beginning to outline the history of his career. At the corner stood drug store, brilliant with electric lights. When they came into this glare each of them turned simultaneously to gaze upon the other's face. Bob stopped suddenly and released his arm. "You're not Jimmy Wells," he snapped. "Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change a man's nose from a Roman to a pug. "It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one." said the tall man. "You've been under arrest for ten minutes, Silky Bob. Now, before we go to the police station here's a note I was asked to hand over to you. It's from the policeman on duty." "Bob unfolded the little piece of paper and his hand trembled a little by the time he had finished. The note was rather short: "Bob: I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to light your cigar I saw it was the face of the man wanted in Chicago Somehow I couldn't do myself, so I went around and got a plain clothesman to do the job." Answer:

  • Jimmy may have thought about keeping the appointment but decided that his friend probably wouldn't keep it because he had gone clear out west.
  • Jimmy and Bob were friends and they split up to make their fortune. Bob earns by hooks and crooks, so Chicago police need him. So he send another policeman to arrest him.
  • Jimmy's letter shows he was the policeman who conversed with Bob in the beginning of the story. In the letter, Jimmy mentions he was on time to meet Bob. While speaking with him, however, he recognized Bob as a criminal wanted by Chicago cops. ... The contents of the letter make it clear Jimmy was the police officer.

Answer:

a.) 1. track - information

2. outline - describe

3. glare - bright unpleasant light.

Explanation:

b.) i.) Bob stood beside the entrance. To keep their vow to meet at a specific location, time, and twenty years from now, he was there to see his old friend Jimmy.

ii.) As a real gentleman who would keep his word, Bob believed Jimmy would be waiting for him at the specified location.

iii.) The tall man was a police officer dressed casually. He had been there to give Bob a note from Jimmy, the police officer Bob had just recently met.

iv.) Two factors led Bob to believe that the tall man was not Jimmy: first, he was two to three inches taller than Jimmy. Second, Jimmy had a Roman nose while the tall man had a pug nose.

v.) Bob was being detained because the Chicago police were looking for him because he was a criminal using the alias "Silky" Bob. Since Jimmy wanted to maintain his word and not betray his friend, he refrained from taking action against Bob. He could not, however, abandon his responsibilities as a police officer.

c.) Two boyhood pals, Bob and Jimmy, finally met after twenty years as promised. After Jimmy noticed Bob in the shadows, the policeman left without revealing his identity. Jimmy dispatched a different police officer to apprehend Bob, who had turned criminal. Jimmy placed duty before friendship as a result.
